Q

How do I password protect my hard drive?

A

Password protection, or the ability to secure a dataset with a user entered key is called encryption. Encryption, as a function, may have various implications that have different priorities in your expectation of initial performance, ease of recovery, availability of versioning, and cost.

Most modern operating systems have built in provisions for encryption, including Mac OS X (FileVault, http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4790and Windows (Bitlocker, http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc731549(v=ws.10).aspx)

Depending on your needs, the built in encryption solutions may or may not be suitable. Our suggestion is one or both of the following:

1. Consult a trustworthy computer services provider. This may be your system admin, the consultant you used to set up your computing environment, etc. The consultation should involve questions relating to how much storage you require, the software mechanism that initiates and monitors the encryption process itself, etc.
2. Educate yourself; a good resources is available at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Encryption

We appreciate that many people would prefer us to point to a product and say that "this will fix all your problems" but we do not have such a magic bullet- more importantly, there is no such magic bullet.
